Some soft drinks give you a headache, which ones and why?

There is no study that, to date, establishes a direct relationship between the consumption of soft drinks in general and the generation of headaches. However, both in the specific composition of any of these drinks and in the way of drinking them we can find clues and hidden reasons that can lead us to causes that, ultimately, will cause ailments such as headaches. This is the case, very present in the media in recent years, of the excessive consumption of caffeine or the intake of soft drinks in a very cold state.

Causes of headaches when drinking soft drinks

The addition to caffeine can be a fundamental factor in the development of headaches that can even become chronic. The investigations that have been carried out in this regard support the idea that many women drink caffeinated soft drinks throughout the week during work breaks or when we leave the office. When the weekend arrives, we stop consuming said substance at the same rate and our body reacts causing headaches among other symptoms such as fatigue or nausea.

It should be clear that these are exceptional cases that are produced by an excess in the intake of beverages, whether they are soft drinks, coffee or tea, that contain caffeine. This is a substance that, taken in moderation, can be a great stimulant and can even be helpful for migraines due to its vasodilator effect. To reduce the negative consequences of caffeine, it is convenient to progressively reduce the daily doses so that we alleviate the derived side effects.

The other great cause, also secondary, that can cause a headache when ingesting a soft drink is when we consume it very cold. By touching the roof of the mouth in this state, you can activate certain nerves that control blood flow to the head. If necessary, the blood vessels become inflamed and cause a very intense, albeit short-lived, headache. To avoid it, it is enough to keep the liquid in the mouth for a few seconds, with the aim of heating it, and then proceed to swallow it.
