Having daily routines from which we practice physical exercise continuously and moderately can be very healthy in order to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle. However, sport can also have another side and that is that doing it can cause headaches for some of us. According to medical specialists, this circumstance is due to the so-called tension headache, caused by excessive tension in the muscles that surround the head area: mainly cervical and shoulders. However, it is not the only cause because these headaches can also occur after making excessive effort.
Sports-related headaches
Tension headache appears due to strong tension in the neck, head or shoulders and its origin may be related to tiredness, stress, anxiety or poor postural hygiene. On the other hand, other medical specialists point to other causes when relating the generation of migraines and the practice of physical exercise. In this case, the headaches would be due to an increase in blood pressure which, in turn, would cause an increase in intracranial pressure.
If we practice sports frequently, it is possible that after these training sessions we may suffer headaches. This can be due to different reasons: a more aggressive training than our body can handle, a decrease in blood sugar due to not having eaten food before exercising, dehydration due to not drinking water or isotonic drinks (according to the case and type of sport) during sports practice or that we have caused some type of nerve injury.
Apart from consulting the doctor to rule out nutritional problems, we can follow a series of recommendations to avoid suffering migraines during or after physical exercise: warm up appropriately for the practice that we are going to carry out, hydrate, make efforts progressively and maintain the correct postures.
