Women, just like men, can be prone to tears when experiencing powerful emotions such as happiness, hilarity, or sadness. The scientific explanation states that the brain sends certain signals to the tear ducts in order for them to generate tears and, in this way, release stress levels so that the body returns to a normal state.
If the cause of the generation of emotion, which is usually sadness, is tension, this release of nervousness through tears may appear accompanied by parallel negative effects with the headache.
Causes that generate the appearance of headaches when we cry
The stress hormones that are released together with crying can generate effects in the body, such as tension, headaches or even migraine episodes in those women who suffer from them more or less frequently. This is because headaches of tension origin are also caused by important modifications that certain substances –serotonin or endorphins- create in the body. The fluctuation of both endorphins and serotonin can lead to organic responses that materialize in the form of crying or tension in areas such as the jaw or neck.
The different headaches that can occur due to crying have symptoms such as the following: tenderness and tension in areas such as the shoulders, neck and scalp, pressure on the forehead, dull and constant pain, as well as a feeling of continuous discomfort in the abdominal area. In any case, we must be aware that such headaches only occur when crying or sadness, in the event that the specific woman suffers an episode of anxiety, tension, depression or accumulated stress.
Although crying may be an optimal mechanism to occasionally release stress in our body, if we want headaches not to affect us frequently, we will have to take measures to reduce stress levels. Breathing deeply, doing some moderate physical activity or stretching the neck and shoulders can help us appear more relaxed.
