Headaches are an excessively widespread pathology today, which is why there are many investigations, as well as medical diagnoses, aimed at discerning the main -and most frequent- factors that trigger this type of anomaly in our body. The influence of our own diet and our lifestyle in general is one of the causes that currently brings together more cases in medical consultations. Some of the foods that, according to these medical theories, can negatively influence the development of headaches are citrus fruits.
Citrus as triggers for headaches
The theory that establishes citrus fruits as a trigger for migraines bases its argument on the fact that it is a food that contains a substance called histamine. However, there are other scientific studies that affirm that the appearance of migraines and headaches is not caused by the ingestion of food itself, but is derived from the reduced metabolization that our body can make of histamine by the Di Amino Oxidase enzyme.
This last hypothesis would rule out the fact that food itself causes the appearance of headaches and places the key in an anomaly in our own organism. Therefore, the action of eating dairy, chocolate or citrus fruits themselves -always in moderation for reasons of general health- would not be harmful in itself, as many articles that have appeared both in written publications and on the Internet have insisted on assenting. In any case, when in doubt we should be able to consult our trusted doctor in order to obtain the most accurate diagnosis possible.
To treat headaches in general, there are specific medications that, for safety, should be prescribed by the GP such as anti-inflammatories, analgesics or aspirin. If the doctor determines that there is some citrus food that is causing the development of these ailments, it is most likely that he will make the decision to advise us to remove said product from our usual diet.
